The Hunger Games: Mokingjay – Part 1

Today I watched The Hunger Games: Mokingjay Part 1 and I thought it was brilliant.
I really enjoy the Hunger Games, including the books. I thought that the film was a great build up for what is to come in Part 2. I especially thought that Josh Hutcherson who plays Peeta Mellark was fantastic. He wasn’t in the film that much but for the small parts he played I thought he was brilliant and really haunting.
My love for Jennifer Lawrence grows greater with every movie I watch her in. She just fascinates me and I think she is a fantastic actress. She is so young yet such a talented actress already and her singing voice was pretty good in the movie too. I loved how “The Hanging Tree” was in the background of the scenes when the people were blowing up the dam. It was very effective. I also love how she again revealed that she loved both Peeta and Gale!
One thing I thought that needed to be touched on more was the significance of the roses. An important part in the book is that Coriolanus Snow smells strongly of genetically enhanced roses and always wears a white rose in his lapel to cover the scent of blood. In the book he also tends to a rose garden. I thought that this was neglected a bit in the film and for people who haven’t read they books they were probably thinking, why all the roses?
One more thing which was a bug bear of mine was that Pollux was an Avox, meaning he had his tongue cut out by the Capitol, yet he managed to whistle to the mokingjays. I’m pretty sure that it would be hard to whistle without a tongue?
Other than that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and can’t wait for next years Part 2, it is just unfortunate that it is going to be the last movie. A concern of mine before the movie was that it was going to be stretched out because they had split 1 book into 2 movies but this wasn’t the case. I was entertained throughout and on the edge of my seat. A fantastic movie which I can’t wait to see again!
May the odds be ever in your favour!
